Original warranties end before you know it

No matter what kind of car you buy, there are two things you can be sure of. Firstly, your warranty will not last forever and, secondly, your vehicle is bound to require maintenance and some repairs from time to time. The initial warranty on your vehicle usually only covers up to 36,000 miles or three years (whichever one comes first). This might sound like an eternity, but it can go by faster than you think.

Once your warranty comes to an end, repairs have a way of surprising you at the worst possible moment. If you don’t have any kind of coverage, repairs and maintenance can really turn your budget upside down. If you’re not quite convinced, just take a moment to consider the lifespan of various essential parts and the cost of replacing them.

The prices of parts will depend on the make and model of your car. Apart from the cost of the parts, you also need to consider labor. The more complex the task and the type of vehicle can also push up the price. For example, luxury vehicles often cost more to repair due to the complexity and delicate nature of the job. Not to mention the fact that repair shops need to fulfill very specific criteria in order to qualify as authorized repairers.

Engine belts will usually only last for up to 60,000 miles, and a new one can cost anything in the region of $500. Mufflers and exhaust systems are crucial, and a damaged system can result in significant fines. You can expect to get up to 80,000 miles out of your original exhaust system but, after this, it can cost about $200 for a the repairs. Fuel filters require regular replacement every 40,000 miles or so. This will set you back more than $150. If your vehicle has a manual transmission, the clutch will need to be replaced after 40,000 to 60,000 miles, and this costs something in the area of $800 or $900. There are different types of braking systems. Disc brake pads usually reach up to 40,000 miles before they require replacing as do drum brake shoes. Brake pads can cost $500 or more per axle while shoes will set you back about the same price for a set.

While some of these repairs might not seem all that expensive on their own, they can add up if several issues need to be tended to at once. Not to mention the risk of other, more extensive damage and breakdown. A comprehensive warranty will not only cover your repair needs, but you can also rest assured that you can rely on a reputable towing service to provide roadside assistance. When a mechanical failure occurs, and you’re miles from home, it can be a great comfort knowing that you won’t be stranded, and help is on the way.
